After the final whistle, Portugal took a point late from Spain, as a thrilling 3-3 draw sent Russia rocking! The Portuguese Star, Cristiano Ronaldo, sealed a hat trick to keep Portugal from going pointless after their opening match.
The game started off in Portugal's favor, after Spanish Right Back Nacho tripped Cristiano inside the area. He stepped up and slotted away penalty by David De Gea. Spanish fans silenced and feeling nauseous down 1-0 in 4th minute.
It took about 20 minuted after that for Spain to finally settle in the match. Portugal pressed high and often, throwing the Spanish out of their groove. It took one deep ball to Diego Costa, who victimized Pepe and the entire defense of Portugal, slotting past Rui Patricio. 1-1 and the match was on!
Portugal have to be one of the fastest teams, in transition from defense to offense, at this World Cup. A true weakness of Spain, is once losing the ball with so many players forward in possession, is the vulnerability of a counter attack. One minute before halftime, Portugal built play up from the back in a swift counter attack, before Cristiano rifled a shot at De Gea. Dave did not save. Huge error by the Spanish keeper, allowed Portugal to recapture the lead just before halftime.
Second half kicked off with Spain dominating possession, as had ended the first half. Spain kept passing as Spain always does, and just couldn't break down the compact Portuguese midfield. It took a ball into the box getting headed down by Busquets, for Spain to equalize. That man Diego Costa again. Smashing the ball into the back of the net from 3 yards out. Tied once again. Scintillating football being played by the Spaniards at this point. Which led to positive things happening for the 2010 Champions. Nacho received a loose ball about 20 yards out, and SMASHED THE LIVING HELL out of that ball. Perfect form. Perfect technique. Easily Goal of the Tournament. It received a rival competitor, later in the match. Spain had snatched a 3-2 lead, and looked to dominate possession for the remainder of the match. That is exactly what they did.
"Ole, Ole" went around as the Spaniards passed forward, backwards, and side to side. It was beautiful to see. As the match winded down, you could see the urgency of Portugal. Started to press higher up the pitch the last 10 minutes. Isco had dictated the entire 2nd half for Spain, as Iniesta did in the first half. He proved himself to handle the big matches for country. It took one man, with one free kick, to make you forget how good Spain were. Pique gave away a free kick, on a naive foul outside the box in the 88th minute. Up steps Cristiano Ronaldo. With the clock slipping away, and Portugal desperately needing a goal, their Captain delivered. Whipping in his free kick around the wall, Cristiano had shocked Spanish fans everywhere. Stealing the show, and stealing the point. Portugal draw 3-3 with Spain.
You could not ask for a better match. Both teams complemented each other in terms of strengths and weaknesses. Portugal did not give up and fought till the end. Spain could feel like this is a loss, but either way, Cristiano Ronaldo played phenomenal. Enjoy the high lights, we will.
